What is it like to write a bachelor thesis at iSYS?

At the end of their studies, students face a challenge - the final thesis, which is considered one of the biggest tasks of the degree programme. Many universities and colleges offer students the opportunity to write their bachelor's thesis in a company. This allows students to conduct research closer to practice and benefit from the company's expertise.

Our working students have the opportunity to write their bachelor thesis at iSYS. Simon has been a software developer with us since the beginning of the year, before that he was a working student. He wrote his bachelor’s thesis at iSYS on the topic of ‘Modernising legacy systems by methodically reconstructing the business logic using a case study’. We asked him what experiences he had in the process.

Hey Simon, how did you come up with the topic for your final thesis?

Hey, I was a working student at iSYS during my studies. I came across the topic through my project manager. I was working on a modernisation project, which made a topic in this area an obvious choice. In general, there are many exciting research aspects at iSYS, so you have a good selection of topics that are suitable for bachelor theses.

Why did you decide to write your thesis at iSYS?

Firstly, I found the topic itself exciting, which is always the most important point for a bachelor’s thesis. Secondly, many students have written their theses at iSYS so far. This immediately gave me the feeling that the quality of supervision at iSYS is good.

How did iSYS support you with your Bachelor’s thesis?

We regularly looked at the current status of the work. We then discussed whether the bachelor’s thesis was moving in the right direction. This regularity also showed us the current status of the project, so we always knew what the next steps were.

There was also a meeting every second Monday for all working students who are currently writing their final thesis at iSYS. This allowed us to help each other and learn from each other’s projects.

What advice would you give to students who are faced with the decision of whether or not to write their Bachelor’s thesis in a company?

The most important thing is to find a topic that you are interested in. To do this, you should start looking for a topic early on. This includes consultations within the company and enquiries with lecturers at the college or university. If the topic turns out to be suitable, you can approach it with a company. Preparing a proposal helped me to clearly define the objectives of the Bachelor’s thesis afterwards so that all parties are on the same page.

Thank you Simon for your time.

Always happy to help.
