Recap: How the web development course with Starcode went

On 27 May 2024, our web development course took place in cooperation with the non-profit association Starcode e.V. Interested schoolgirls* were able to immerse themselves in the basics of web development.

It was shown what the elementary basics of a website structure look like and how various page contents can be displayed on this basis.

This is how the day went:

After a welcome from Nina Mandl, head of the Starcode e.V. local teams, and a brief introduction of the course instructors, the programme got underway.

The first step was to explain what HTML is and the meaning of tags in HTML source code.

After the first lines of code were written, the next topic was CSS.

This was followed by a demonstration of what divs are all about and what function they fulfil.

Last but not least, the principle of hyperlinks was explained – naturally by having the course participants link to their favourite pages in their own code.

What the course participants say:

The course was very well received by the participating students:

Hannah (14): ‘The course was well organised and there was an immediate sense of achievement that you can be proud of. I would be very happy if there was another course like this in the future’

Sophia (13): ‘I really enjoyed the course and had a lot of fun. It was exciting for me to see how you can create your own website and how to write code. I particularly liked designing the homepage.’

About Starcode e.V.

Starcode offers free programming courses for girls and women from the 5th grade onwards to introduce them to the diverse possibilities and opportunities of computer science. As part of an open and inspiring community, the association aims to arouse interest in relevant degree programmes. Together, the aim is to ensure more gender diversity in the IT sector.

Our cooperation with Starcode e.V.

We want to help Starcode get more girls and young women interested in IT. For this reason, we supported Starcode at the beginning of December 2023 with a donation of EUR 1,500. In addition, we are making our meeting rooms and our technical expertise available free of charge.

In concrete terms, this means that Starcode can use our conference rooms for training courses and workshops at any time. In addition, it is planned that our employees will support the Starcode team in leading courses as well as in the development and conception of learning content and materials.
