From the lecture theatre to the workplace – a practical report
Why don’t you briefly introduce yourself? What did you study and how long have you been working at iSYS?
Hi, I’m Lukas! I studied computer science at HAW Landshut. I started my studies there straight after graduating from high school and joined iSYS in August 2020.
At what point in your studies did you decide to look for a working student job and why?
I had never actually looked directly for a working student job. At universities, it is customary to complete the fifth semester as an internship semester in a company. I had chosen iSYS as my partner. When iSYS offered me a working student job at the end of the practical semester, I didn’t say no – after all, I felt comfortable here and was looking forward to consolidating my theoretical knowledge more intensively through practical application in real customer projects.
It is certainly a certain additional workload alongside your studies, but you learn early on how larger software projects are realised, gain practical experience and, last but not least, benefit from tips from experienced developers. The practice sessions at the university simply can’t keep up with that.
Why did you decide in favour of iSYS back then?
When looking for an employer, it was particularly important to me that the working atmosphere was suitable and that I was given flexibility in terms of where and when I could work. A service provider company with a wide range of software projects also seemed ideal for me to develop further. I found the right company in iSYS – I can certainly confirm the good Kununu ratings.
What were your tasks as a working student?
As a working student, I was involved as a software developer in a customer project to further develop a web application for the management of biological substances for a research centre. My tasks included fixing bugs and implementing and testing new features.
What made you decide to join iSYS full-time after your studies?
After I was very satisfied with the support I received during my internship semester, my working student job and my Bachelor’s thesis and came to appreciate the uncomplicated cooperation with my colleagues, it was clear to me that I would like to work there full-time.
What are your current tasks? How have they changed compared to before?
I continue to work as a software developer, but now, in addition to programming, I also liaise with customers myself and clarify requirements, for example. I recently started working on a second project for an energy supplier as Application Manager for specialised energy systems. There I am responsible for the smooth interaction of several applications and make adjustments to the data model, database queries or interfaces, for example. My work is therefore very varied and challenging – you’re always learning something new.
What is your conclusion – what is it like to enter the world of work after graduating?
For me, the start was quite unimpressive, as I had already arrived in the working world during my studies. However, I was allowed to take on my own customer project straight after graduating, which came with a certain amount of challenge and responsibility.
What are your plans for the future?
First of all, I will continue to gain practical experience. However, I don’t want to rule out the possibility of completing a Master’s programme in the future.
