Five reasons why iSYS uses open source software
What is meant by open source software?
Open source software is characterised by its licence-free nature and is accessible free of charge. The software code can be edited by anyone and the software can thus be further developed. The edited version of the software can in turn be redistributed publicly. Software developers can improve their programming skills by modifying existing codes and orientating themselves on the programmes written by others.
We use open source software in many areas. In addition to the financial benefits of open source, there are several other reasons why we often and gladly use open source applications:
1. Interoperability – the seamless linking of systems
Interoperability is the ability of different systems or devices to connect and communicate with each other in a coordinated way without the end user having to control this process. By using open source software, we can edit the code of the systems to be connected to enable this communication. This allows us to easily connect different requirements of our customers using one software.
2. Independence from manufacturers
Open source software is freely accessible from anywhere. It is not tied to any manufacturer conditions. This enables us to work flexibly and independently, allowing us to focus fully on the needs of our customers.
3. Flexibility due to customisation options
Customise the software to your own needs in no time at all – this is possible with open source software. Thanks to the accessibility of the code, you can customise the functionality of the software to your own wishes. This allows us to implement our customers’ wishes in a flexible and targeted manner and to customise them at any time during the course of our collaboration.
4. Development of know-how
You gain experience and expertise through regular programming. Open source software offers the perfect basis for this thanks to its accessibility and orientation towards previously written code. We also regularly use it as part of our iSYS Academy.
5. More security through transparency
With open source software, the entire code can be viewed. This transparency allows us to ensure that there are no security vulnerabilities in the code and, if there are, we can fix them ourselves. This enables us to fulfil the security requirements of our customers. This guarantees the smooth operation and security of the software.
